RepGen Supports Reparations Now Resolution
RepGen endorsed and supported the Reparations Now Resolution, introduced in May by U.S. Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA). The resolution calls for federal reparations for the descendants of enslaved Black people. “As a descendant of my enslaved ancestors, I am deeply humbled to reintroduce the Reparations Now Resolution,” Rep. Lee said in a statement. “While attempts to whitewash, obstruct, and deny Black history are made, we must fight the white supremacy rampant in our country, against the rising authoritarianism, and not allow anyone to deny Black folks the ability to survive and to thrive.” Watch Rep. RepGen Supports H.R. 40
The Reparations Now Resolution supports existing Reparations efforts such as H.R. 40, which was introduced in February by U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). In May RepGen joined movement partners, endorsed and supported HR.40. H.R. 40 seeks to establish a federal commission to examine the lasting legacy of slavery and develop Reparations proposals for the descendants of enslaved Black people. “H.R. 40 is a powerful reminder of the work that remains and offers us a pathway toward truth, reconciliation, and accountability for the deep, structural injustices that continue to ravage Black communities to this day,” Rep. Pressley said in a statement.
